Hi everyone. I can see many of you have accepted your invitation to the class blog. I am sure you will find this space a very useful conduit for discussing your research and participating in the course online.
It is also a really good means of ensuring everyoine gets the same information. This brings me to the purpose of this post which is to clarify the expectations around the first studio research activities related to Project 1.
There are two tasks to engage in as follows:
Self Directed Research:
due week 2
1. Locate four newspaper headings that you can modify to express an aspect of contemporary news issues. Develop four roughs blocking in type areas for the front and back of three pages of the booklet.
2. Select a typeface (eg: Helvetica) or a type-style (eg: Neo-Grotesque) on which you will focus in project 1. Collect a specimen for the type and write a 500 - word critique of its design. This written appraisal will include description of design features (for instance serifs, stroke weight, counters, proportion, suited applications), its classification, and information on its historical background and designer. Include a relevant reference list. Post to the class blog.
