Week 6 - Time to get down to business on the new project brief

As we wrap things up on Project 1 we begin to move into the next phase of the course. This means that the group will begin to use the potential of the web in a number of publishing related ways.

Project 2 Brief
The first thing to do is to begin to familiarise yourself with the brief we'll be living with for the rest of the semester. As you know it this project is about exploring the development of an online magazine - a digital typographic srtifact/resource. The brief is quite flexible in how you interpret it but it is a collaborative team based process. this of course reflects the reality of most publications. Jump over to the brief and give some time to soaking up what it is about.

Online Lectures
The first of our online lectures related to the development of the online magazine and discusses the crucial role Style Sheets play in the workflow of both print and digital publications. This a perenially shiftign landscape of practice. I am more than conscious that I'll have to develop material relating to the new publication parameters of more mobile formats such as iPad. While that is beyond the scope of our new project (this semester at least), you will find the lecture deals with considerations you'll need to factor into the development of web and pdf aspects of the magazine.

There is a Discussion Point due week 7 (that’s the week after COFA Study Week)

Discussion Point: Identify a style guide (or select one from those provided in the lecture) and critique it’s design as a tool for maintaining control and consistency (200 word max). Support your comments with examples of its application to collateral or published material. Post your response to the Studio Blog.

A Type Primer
Also take the time to persuse this seven minute video primer on typography. It's amongst the best online content we've seen come to light on type - fortunately there is more and more video material out there to assist you. We'll keep posting - you do some digging too. Feel free to post relevant material you find at all times.

It was good to meet you all yesterday...

Hi Everyone, it was good to drop into the studio and meet you yesterday morning. As I mentioned yesterday, and perhaps as you've already discovered during the first research task, the blog offers us the opportunity to post links, images and video that we find to share with each other.

The posts in response to the first blog post of the semester are great. There is as one might expect a wide diversity of selections  and the level of discussion is sound. I think it is a good start to the process we are undertaking. Well done everyone. If there is anyone who has yet to post please do this as soon as possible.

 Lauren  may already have mentioned the video on The Hatch Show Letterpress Museum but if you have yet to view it please take a few minutes to check it out.

Also if you have yet to - remember to head on over to Lectures and follow the link to the first lecture What is Typography? You'll find the lectures are generally fairly conversational in tone but full of information and links out to other resources.
