SR2 - Clarisse Djaja

The University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) has a very condensed style guide compared to other companies: http://identity.berkeley.edu/guidelines/berkeley-graphic-style-09.pdf

This can be seen as both a liberating and constraining point. To the types of people that need direction and/or are unfamiliar with page layouts and other design principles, this style guide won't be much help. Although it has a strong direction with the usage of typeface and colour scheme, it does not clearly state where the Berkeley logo and logotype can be placed on the collateral or published material.

Some of the style guide users will see this as an opportunity to create interesting page layouts and applications. However, most collateral and published material for Berkeley follow the University's academic aesthetic.

Their aesthetic is very consistent as they use a dark blue and bronze colour for their logo, as well as for their colour scheme. All other used colours are shades of the Pantone 540 Blue and Pantone 139 Yellow. Four typefaces are used: University Old Style (which was designed in 1938 especially for the university), Gill Sans, Futura and Univers. By laying out these four typefaces, combined with the colour scheme, a sense of control is maintained throughout all produced materials.
